Exchange Semester at Toronto Metropolitan University - Bachelor of Journalism
Role: Student, Bachelor of Journalism (Winter, 2024)
As part of my studies for the Bachelor of Communications degree, I had the incredible opportunity to complete a semester abroad at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). During my exchange, I was able to immerse myself in the heart of Canada’s media industries and further hone my skills in journalism through specialised courses in Producing the News, TV News, Investigative Journalism, and Feature Writing and Current Affairs.
Courses and Key Learnings
The courses I undertook were specifically designed to provide real-world experience, with a focus on developing practical skills across multiple media formats. These courses helped me deepen my understanding of modern journalism, preparing me for a fast-paced career in media. Key takeaways include:
Producing the News: I learned the fundamentals of producing news stories for broadcast, including structuring a compelling narrative, writing scripts, and working under tight deadlines. This course also covered news production techniques for both traditional and digital platforms, providing a broad skillset in multimedia content creation.
TV News: I gained hands-on experience in the creation of TV news stories, from scripting to video production. This course helped me develop a strong understanding of visual storytelling, ensuring that the technical aspects of news production aligned with journalistic integrity.
Investigative Journalism: This course focused on research techniques, critical thinking, and investigative methods. I learned how to approach complex stories, uncovering details often hidden beneath the surface. Ethical considerations, legal boundaries, and effective interviewing were core aspects of this course.
Feature Writing and Current Affairs: I explored in-depth feature writing, focusing on long-form journalism. This course enabled me to sharpen my ability to create engaging and informative content on current events, while honing my research and writing skills.
Real-World Experience and Practical Application
While at TMU, I was able to apply my academic learning to real-world journalism. The university's emphasis on experiential learning gave me the chance to engage with industry professionals and gain valuable insights into newsrooms and production environments. Additionally, my time at TMU included access to the latest media technologies, including advanced editing suites and digital-first newsrooms, which allowed me to produce high-quality work across multiple platforms.
Impact and Achievements
My semester abroad at TMU was an invaluable experience that enriched my understanding of journalism, particularly in the context of North American media. The combination of practical coursework and exposure to industry-standard technologies allowed me to produce work that I am proud of. This experience also greatly enhanced my skills in news production, investigative journalism, and feature writing, while also giving me the confidence to pursue a career in the competitive media industry.
Looking Forward
The semester abroad at TMU was not only an academic milestone but also an opportunity to expand my professional network and gain a global perspective on journalism. Moving forward, I plan to apply the skills and knowledge gained during my exchange to my future career in media, whether in investigative reporting, feature writing, or broadcast journalism.
